Stephen Root Confirms He Plays Brian Heder in GTA 6, Finally Revealing One of the Game’s Cast Members

Actor Stephen Root has confirmed that he is part of the cast of Grand Theft Auto VI, ending months of speculation surrounding the voice behind Brian Heder, the veteran smuggler introduced in GTA 6’s second trailer.

Root confirmed his involvement during an interview with Associated Press while attending the BAFTA TV Tea Party in California. When asked about the long-running speculation, the actor acknowledged that players had correctly identified him after hearing Brian Heder speak in Rockstar’s promotional material.

The confirmation is especially notable because Rockstar Games has still not published an official cast list for GTA 6, and most of the actors believed to be playing the game’s major characters remain unconfirmed.

Stephen Root Says Fans Recognized His Voice Almost Immediately

According to Root, keeping his GTA 6 role secret became difficult once Rockstar began showing Brian Heder publicly.

Speaking to AP, Root said viewers familiar with his work quickly recognized his voice after Brian appeared in GTA 6 promotional footage. The actor explained that too many people knew his voice from projects such as King of the Hill, making the secret increasingly difficult to maintain.

Root also expressed enthusiasm about being part of the game, describing the project positively and praising what Rockstar has created.

That confirmation resolves one of the longest-running GTA 6 casting theories.

When Rockstar released Trailer 2 in May 2025, players immediately pointed out that Brian Heder sounded remarkably similar to Root. Game Informer was among the outlets that noted the resemblance at the time, although no official confirmation existed then.

Brian Heder Is One of GTA 6’s Major Supporting Characters

Brian Heder is not simply a background character.

Rockstar describes him as a veteran drug runner from the golden age of smuggling in the Leonida Keys, where he continues moving illegal goods through his boat yard alongside his third wife, Lori.

Brian is also directly connected to protagonist Jason Duval.

According to Rockstar’s official character information, Brian allows Jason to live rent-free at one of his properties in exchange for helping with local shakedowns and other work.

That relationship appears to place Brian relatively early in Jason’s story and gives Root a potentially significant supporting role throughout at least part of GTA 6.

Fans Had Suspected Stephen Root Since GTA 6 Trailer 2

Root’s involvement was one of the strongest casting theories surrounding GTA 6.

His distinctive voice led players to identify him almost immediately after Trailer 2 was released. Some outlets described the connection as highly likely even though Rockstar never named the actor.

The theory was strengthened by the character’s personality and appearance, which many fans felt also resembled roles Root has played throughout his career.

Root is particularly well known for playing Monroe Fuches in HBO’s Barry, Milton Waddams in Office Space, and voicing characters including Bill Dauterive and Buck Strickland in King of the Hill.

His confirmation now removes the speculation surrounding Brian Heder entirely.

Rockstar Still Has Not Revealed GTA 6’s Full Cast

Despite Root confirming his role personally, Rockstar Games remains unusually quiet about GTA 6’s cast.

The studio has officially introduced characters including Jason Duval, Lucia Caminos, Cal Hampton, Brian Heder, Boobie Ike, Dre’Quan Priest, Raul Bautista and Real Dimez, but it has not published a complete list of the actors portraying them.

Several names continue to circulate among fans.

Manni L. Perez has long been linked to Lucia, while Dylan Rourke has frequently been suggested as Jason’s performer. However, neither role has been officially confirmed by Rockstar, and reports claiming Perez had personally confirmed her role in August were later traced to an impersonator account rather than the actress herself.

Similarly, former Saturday Night Live cast member Bobby Moynihan has been widely suspected of playing Cal Hampton because of the character’s recognizable voice, but that casting also remains unconfirmed.

That makes Stephen Root one of the first major GTA 6 performers to publicly verify his involvement himself.

Stephen Root Gives GTA 6 a Recognizable Hollywood Name

Root’s casting also stands out because Rockstar’s recent major releases have generally relied heavily on actors who were not necessarily household names before their games launched.

That was notably the case with performers behind the protagonists of GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2.

Earlier Grand Theft Auto games, however, frequently featured prominent actors. GTA: Vice City included Ray Liotta as Tommy Vercetti, while GTA: San Andreas featured Samuel L. Jackson as Officer Frank Tenpenny.

Root’s involvement therefore represents something of a return to recognizable Hollywood talent appearing in an important Grand Theft Auto supporting role.

Exactly how large Brian Heder’s role will ultimately be remains unknown.

More GTA 6 Cast Reveals Could Follow Before Launch

Root’s confirmation could open the door for additional actors to begin publicly acknowledging their involvement as GTA 6 approaches release.

Rockstar’s secrecy surrounding the game has been extensive, but marketing activity has increased considerably in recent months, including the release of the Extended Look presentation and additional interviews with Rockstar developers.

The company may eventually reveal the complete cast itself, although it has not announced when that will happen.

For now, one mystery has finally been resolved.

Stephen Root is officially part of GTA 6, and he is the actor behind Brian Heder.
