Exactly one month from today, the wait ends. Grand Theft Auto VI launches on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, closing a 13-year gap between new mainline Grand Theft Auto releases and ending one of the longest, strangest and most closely watched development stories in modern gaming.
GTA 6 has already survived two major generations of leaks, multiple delays, years of near-total silence from Rockstar Games and a marketing campaign that has ranged from record-breaking trailers to an unprecedented 27-minute presentation premiering first on Netflix. In the final months alone, Rockstar has opened the doors to selected journalists, released dozens of official screenshots, detailed Leonida’s wildlife and weather, discussed Jason and Lucia’s relationship, revealed its massive radio lineup and finally published the game’s Launch Trailer on October 15. Rockstar’s official site still lists November 19, 2026 as the release date.
With only 31 days remaining, GTA 6 is no longer a mysterious logo and two trailers. We now know a remarkable amount about its protagonists, open world, activities, police systems, vehicles, NPCs, weather, wildlife, music and the philosophy Rockstar used to build it. At the same time, major pieces — particularly the full story, multiplayer and any PC release — remain deliberately hidden.
Here is the road that brought GTA 6 here, and what players can realistically expect when Vice City finally opens next month.
February 2022: Rockstar Finally Says the Next GTA Is Real
After years of rumors, alleged leaks and endless speculation, Rockstar publicly acknowledged its next Grand Theft Auto game on February 4, 2022.
The announcement was remarkably understated. Buried inside a broader Grand Theft Auto community update, Rockstar said development on the next entry was “well underway” and that its goal was to significantly move beyond what it had previously delivered. The company did not reveal the title, setting, characters, logo or release window.
For fans who had been waiting since GTA V launched in September 2013, that single paragraph was enough.
What nobody knew at the time was that the first meaningful look at the game would not come from Rockstar.

September 2022: One of the Biggest Leaks in Gaming History
On September 18, 2022, roughly 90 videos from unfinished GTA 6 development builds appeared online.
The material showed early gameplay, development tools, animations and scenes involving two protagonists later known officially as Jason and Lucia. It also exposed a modern version of Vice City long before Rockstar had publicly named the setting. The footage totaled roughly 50 minutes and represented an extraordinary breach of an unreleased AAA game.
Rockstar confirmed the following day that an unauthorized third party had illegally accessed and downloaded confidential information from its systems. The studio said it was “extremely disappointed” that details of its next game had been shared that way but did not expect the incident to disrupt development or its live services.
The incident ultimately became a criminal case. Arion Kurtaj, a member of the Lapsus$ hacking group linked to the breach, was later sentenced to indefinite detention in a secure hospital after being found responsible for major cyberattacks including the Rockstar intrusion.
The leak spoiled Rockstar’s chance to introduce the game entirely on its own terms, but it also confirmed something fans had only suspected: GTA was returning to Vice City with two protagonists, including the franchise’s first female lead in a modern mainline GTA.
December 2023: Trailer 1 Turns GTA 6 Into a Global Event
More than a year passed before Rockstar was ready to show GTA 6 officially.
On November 8, 2023, Sam Houser announced that the first trailer for the next Grand Theft Auto would arrive in early December. Rockstar later scheduled it for December 5 at 9 a.m. ET.
Then history repeated itself.
A low-quality version leaked online shortly before the planned premiere, prompting Rockstar to release Trailer 1 early on December 4, 2023.
This time, there was no ambiguity.
Grand Theft Auto VI was official.
The trailer introduced Lucia, showed a modern Vice City overflowing with beaches, nightlife, social media clips, alligators, dirt bikes and Florida-inspired chaos, and confirmed that the wider state is called Leonida. Rockstar described it as the “biggest, most immersive evolution” of Grand Theft Auto yet.
Trailer 1 became the biggest non-music video debut in YouTube history at the time, generating more than 93 million views in its first 24 hours as a YouTube exclusive, according to Take-Two.
Its original target was simply 2025.
That date would not survive.
2025: The First Delay — and Then Trailer 2 Changes Everything
On May 2, 2025, Rockstar announced that GTA 6 would no longer arrive in 2025. The new release date was May 26, 2026.
Rockstar said the additional time was necessary to deliver the quality players expected.
Only four days later, on May 6, Rockstar unexpectedly released Trailer 2.
The second trailer dramatically expanded what was known about the game. Jason became a proper co-lead rather than the mostly mysterious man seen beside Lucia in Trailer 1, and Rockstar established the central premise: an easy score goes wrong, dragging the couple into a criminal conspiracy stretching across Leonida.
Rockstar simultaneously transformed its GTA 6 website into a much larger reveal.
Players were introduced to areas beyond Vice City — including the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Port Gellhorn, Ambrosia and Mount Kalaga National Park — and to supporting characters such as Cal Hampton, Boobie Ike, Dre’Quan Priest, Real Dimez, Raul Bautista and Brian Heder.
A large collection of official screenshots also gave the first proper look at Leonida outside trailer editing.
Trailer 2 was another enormous event. Take-Two said it generated more than 475 million views across platforms in its first 24 hours.
By this point, GTA 6 had stopped feeling like an abstract future release. Its world and cast were finally taking shape.

November 2025: GTA 6 Moves to November 19, 2026
The second delay arrived on November 6, 2025.
Rockstar moved GTA 6 from May 26 to November 19, 2026, saying the extra months were needed to finish the game with the level of polish players expected.
That date has remained unchanged ever since.
Today, Rockstar, Take-Two and the official store continue to list November 19 as launch day.
And now, for the first time, that date is exactly one month away.
Summer 2026: GTA 6 Finally Goes on Sale
Pre-orders opened on June 25, 2026.
The Standard Edition is priced at $79.99 in the United States, while the Ultimate Edition costs $99.99 and contains additional vehicles, weapons, apparel and other content threaded across Jason and Lucia’s story.
Digital pre-orders can begin preloading on November 12.
Rockstar is also selling what it calls a physical version, but the box contains a download code rather than a game disc. Rockstar Support confirms there is no disc inside.
A PC version still has not been officially announced. The only confirmed launch platforms remain PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

August 2026: CyberLeek Starts Publishing Unauthorized Gameplay
Just as Rockstar’s official marketing was preparing to enter its biggest phase, another leak campaign began.
In August, a person or group using the name CyberLeek started releasing unauthorized GTA 6 gameplay clips.
The videos appeared to show Jason driving, fighting NPCs, stealing vehicles, flying and interacting with the open world. One early video appeared to show the return of a six-star wanted level. Several clips were removed following copyright claims.
CyberLeek also attempted to use the attention around the footage to promote cryptocurrency.
Take-Two responded aggressively. The publisher sought subpoenas involving Microsoft and Discord as part of an effort to identify those responsible for distributing copyrighted GTA 6 material.
For Rockstar’s developers, the leaks were not treated as harmless previews.
On August 26, the studio issued an unusually personal statement describing the situation as “heartbreaking for our team.” Rockstar acknowledged that players had waited a long time for official gameplay and said the company wanted fans to experience the game the way its developers intended.
Fortunately for Rockstar, its biggest official reveal was only one day away.
August 27: Netflix Gets the Biggest Official Look at GTA 6 Yet
Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look premiered on Netflix on August 27 before becoming available through Rockstar and YouTube later that day.
The presentation runs 26 minutes and 48 seconds and was captured entirely from in-game footage on a PlayStation 5.
It changed the conversation around GTA 6.
For the first time, players could see extended examples of how Rockstar’s new systems fit together rather than trying to interpret two-minute trailers.
The presentation showed Jason and Lucia switching between one another, living together, interacting physically as a couple and moving through ordinary routines between crimes. It also showcased robberies, police encounters, fitness, body changes, food, vehicles, kayaking, jet skis, scuba diving and the social-media culture running through Leonida.
Rockstar’s goal became clearer: GTA 6 is not simply GTA V with a larger map and better graphics. It borrows some of the slower, more physical world simulation of Red Dead Redemption 2 and places it inside a modern Grand Theft Auto.

What Jason and Lucia Change About GTA
The biggest structural difference is the protagonists themselves.
Jason and Lucia are not simply two criminals who occasionally share missions. They are a couple, and Rockstar has built significant parts of the game around that relationship.
Subsequent demonstrations showed Jason calling Lucia to hang out, greeting her with a kiss, walking while holding hands, going to the gym together and transitioning from mundane activities into crime.
Their relationship can coexist with open-world chaos rather than disappearing whenever the player leaves a mission.
Rockstar’s writers have described the pair as deliberately different.
In an October interview with LOVE Magazine, the narrative team explained that Lucia actively pursues a better life, while Jason is more likely to be pushed by circumstances. Both were written to be flawed, vulnerable and capable of getting things wrong.
The story also explores a modern version of the American Dream — not only becoming impossibly rich, but simply having financial stability, paying off debt and building a home and family.
That makes their criminal path inherently contradictory: they are committing increasingly dangerous crimes while chasing an ordinary life.

Leonida Could Be Rockstar’s Most Ambitious Open World
GTA 6 takes place across the fictional state of Leonida, Rockstar’s modern interpretation of Florida.
Vice City remains its cultural center, but Rockstar is deliberately avoiding building the game as one giant city surrounded by empty countryside.
The world contains beaches, swamps, islands, industrial zones, smaller coastal towns, rural areas and mountainous wilderness.
Game Informer’s September cover story described Leonida as Rockstar’s largest map yet, while interviews emphasized density just as much as physical scale. The studio has focused heavily on rooftops, back alleys, interiors and spaces that previously might have existed only as decoration.
Rockstar has not released an official square-mile measurement, so online claims assigning an exact map size should still be treated cautiously.
What Rockstar has made clear is that there are many more places to enter and much more activity packed into the world.
Hurricanes, Tropical Storms and More Than 170 Animal Species
Game Informer also revealed how much effort Rockstar has put into the natural side of Leonida.
The game’s weather technology can generate more localized conditions rather than simply changing the entire map from sunny to rainy at once.
Reports from Rockstar’s interviews describe tropical storms and hurricanes, dynamic clouds and a wind system capable of interacting with vegetation, water, loose objects and architecture.
Wildlife is similarly ambitious.
Rockstar developers told Game Informer that Leonida contains more than 170 animal species, covering animals across land, air and water.
Those include creatures such as alligators, manatees, flamingos, pelicans, sharks, turtles and marine life.
The intention is clearly to bring some of Red Dead Redemption 2’s environmental obsession into a contemporary setting — except this time the environment includes highways, skyscrapers, clubs and millions of tourists alongside swamps and wildlife.
NPCs Are Supposed to Feel Less Like Background Decoration
Rockstar’s obsession with simulation extends to ordinary people.
GTA 6 features greater variation in NPC height, body shape, skin details, tattoos, hairstyles and clothing. Recent reporting has also described specialized teams dedicated to ambient conversations and pedestrian behavior.
Characters can react to the player watching or following them. Situations can escalate unexpectedly. A minor confrontation can become a fight, which can attract police, which can derail whatever the player originally planned to do.
That was demonstrated directly during previews.
In one session, Rockstar intended to take Jason and Lucia to a salon. An encounter with pedestrians instead triggered a brawl and police response, forcing the couple to flee.
That kind of interruption appears central to Rockstar’s idea of GTA 6: plans are not guaranteed to stay plans.
Crime Is Becoming More Deliberate
GTA will obviously still allow players to create chaos, but GTA 6 appears to give crime more structure.
Rockstar demonstrations have shown players evaluating potential robbery locations rather than immediately pulling out a gun.
Jason and Lucia can reportedly inspect whether a target looks worth the risk. During one demonstration, Rockstar considered robbing a bank but abandoned the idea because there were too many guards.
Other robberies can involve alarms and quieter approaches.
Vehicles also have more detailed theft mechanics. Rockstar has shown systems for assessing vehicle security and using different tools rather than every locked car behaving identically.
Cash now has additional consequences as well. Money carried physically can be lost, while ATMs allow the player to deposit it into an account.
These mechanics do not turn GTA into a hardcore simulator, but they make criminal activity feel less interchangeable.
Police Are Smarter Than GTA V’s
Rockstar has repeatedly emphasized changes to law enforcement.
Police can reportedly use information about the suspect, including clothing and vehicles, to identify Jason or Lucia. Losing sight of officers does not necessarily mean the player instantly becomes anonymous.
Rockstar’s demonstrations suggest escaping can involve changing circumstances rather than simply hiding until stars disappear.
If Jason and Lucia are together, police can also recognize them as a pair. The player may decide to split up, abandon one protagonist temporarily or escape using different vehicles.
At the same time, Rockstar still wants police encounters to produce the unpredictable chases Grand Theft Auto is known for.
GTA 6 Is Packed With Things to Do
The material released so far shows a much broader life outside the main story.
Activities shown or discussed across official presentations and Rockstar-sanctioned previews include gym workouts, billiards, racing, kayaking, jet skis, scuba diving, fishing, airboats, mini golf and base jumping, alongside nightlife and more traditional GTA criminal activities.
Not every brief action shown in footage should automatically be treated as a fully repeatable minigame, but the overall direction is clear.
Rockstar wants players to spend time in Leonida even when they are not advancing the story.
September: GTA 6 Takes Over Magazines Around the World
Rockstar’s marketing strategy became unusually editorial in the weeks after the Extended Look.
Rather than relying entirely on its own trailers, the company gave selected publications access to developers and demonstrations.
French magazine TROISCOULEURS published an extensive Rob Nelson interview after visiting Rockstar North, with discussion covering how Rockstar builds its worlds, the importance of Jason and Lucia as a couple, performance capture, chapters, player freedom and the balance between cinematic presentation and interaction.
Then came Game Informer Issue 382, with GTA 6 on the cover.
The magazine’s 14-page cover story included interviews with Rockstar developers and 12 previously unseen screenshots. The digital edition arrived September 29.
Game Informer provided some of the deepest information yet about the technology behind Leonida, including weather, wildlife, NPC design and world density.
In early October, LOVE Magazine Issue 27 offered something different: a deeper look at Jason, Lucia and the themes behind their relationship and the American Dream.
The result was a marketing campaign where magazines were revealing not simply screenshots, but how Rockstar was thinking about the game.

October 8: Rockstar Reveals GTA 6’s Music World
Music has always been part of Grand Theft Auto’s identity, and GTA 6 appears to expand it substantially.
On October 8, Rockstar announced that GTA 6 will contain its biggest and most varied selection of in-game radio yet, previewing six stations and confirming additional genres, talk programming and on-demand podcasts.
One particularly important change is that radio is no longer confined to vehicles.
Jason and Lucia can use connected headphones or earbuds to listen while traveling on foot.
That may sound like a small feature, but it fundamentally changes how Rockstar’s enormous licensed soundtrack can accompany exploration.
The company’s official media library now contains 99 GTA 6 screenshots, alongside four main videos, additional clips and artwork.

October 8–14: CyberLeek Returns — Then Says the Leaks Are Over
The unauthorized side of GTA 6’s story also returned in October.
On October 8, CyberLeek released approximately 25 minutes of additional footage that VGC reviewed and said appeared authentic. It reportedly showed races, vehicle customization, development/debug functionality and significant character nudity. Rockstar did not authenticate the footage publicly.
CyberLeek subsequently threatened to release a fuller game build if a cryptocurrency reached a certain market capitalization and demanded that Rockstar reverse its approach to physical distribution.
On October 14, however, the person or group announced that the current leak campaign was ending and said it would not release the full game or its ending.
None of the leaked development footage should be treated as a guarantee that every visible option or behavior will exist unchanged in the retail game.

October 14: Bloomberg Explains Why GTA 6 Took So Long
One day before Rockstar’s latest trailer, Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier published a major investigation into GTA 6’s development following a visit to Rockstar North.
The report helped explain the enormous gap between Rockstar’s releases.
GTA 6 went through major changes in scale, leadership and production. Early concepts were significantly more ambitious geographically, while Rockstar was simultaneously attempting to transform a workplace culture previously criticized for intense crunch.
Rockstar also massively expanded during the project.
The company believes the technology, tools and teams built for GTA 6 will allow future projects to move faster than this one did. VGC separately reported Rockstar leadership saying its next game should not require another eight-year development cycle.
It is an important piece of context: GTA 6 has taken this long not simply because Rockstar wanted a bigger map, but because the company was rebuilding both the game and significant parts of how it makes games.
October 15: Rockstar Releases the GTA 6 Launch Trailer
Then, last week, came the clearest indication yet that the end of the wait is real.
On October 15, Rockstar released the Grand Theft Auto VI Launch Trailer.
Not “Trailer 3.”
The Launch Trailer.
The 90-second video returns the focus to Jason and Lucia, their relationship and the conspiracy that pulls them across Leonida.
It also debuted “Flower in a Hurricane”, a new song from Justice featuring Tame Impala, SZA and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. Rockstar identifies Justice as part of GTA 6’s original score team.
The fact that Rockstar is already using the words “Launch Trailer” with more than four weeks remaining speaks volumes about where development has reached.
This is no longer a game living somewhere on a distant release calendar.
What Should We Expect From GTA 6 on November 19?
The best way to describe GTA 6 based on everything Rockstar has shown is a collision between GTA V’s freedom and Red Dead Redemption 2’s obsession with immersion.
It still has fast cars, shootouts, police pursuits, absurd characters, radio stations and exaggerated American satire.
But underneath that familiar GTA structure is a much more reactive simulation.
Characters have routines.
Jason and Lucia can spend time together outside missions.
Animals inhabit ecosystems.
Weather changes geographically.
NPCs react to what the player does.
Cars have deeper theft and customization systems.
Crimes can be evaluated rather than simply triggered.
The protagonists’ appearance and condition can change.
Interior spaces matter more.
And the world appears intentionally designed to interrupt the player with events that were not part of the original plan.
The most important difference may ultimately be emotional rather than technical.
GTA 6 is built around two people.
Jason and Lucia are criminals, but Rockstar is also treating them as a relationship the player inhabits over dozens of hours. LOVE Magazine’s interviews make clear that the studio wants both characters to feel vulnerable, flawed and human rather than simply functioning as avatars for chaos.
If Rockstar succeeds, GTA 6 could feel simultaneously like the biggest Grand Theft Auto and its most personal.

What We Still Do Not Know
Despite everything revealed, Rockstar has kept several major questions unanswered.
The company has not announced a PC release date.
It has not provided a complete explanation of GTA 6’s multiplayer successor to GTA Online.
We do not know the exact length of the main campaign from an official specification.
Rockstar has not published the final full map or its dimensions.
And most importantly, the company has successfully kept the central twists and ending of Jason and Lucia’s story out of its official marketing.
For a game that has leaked this many times, an enormous amount still remains unknown.
That may be one of Rockstar’s biggest accomplishments.
One Month Left
From a single sentence in February 2022 to 90 stolen development videos, from Trailer 1’s record-breaking debut to two delays, from Trailer 2 and its enormous screenshot drop to CyberLeek, Netflix, Game Informer, LOVE Magazine, Bloomberg and finally the Launch Trailer, GTA 6 has had almost every kind of pre-release story imaginable.
Now almost all of that becomes secondary.
There are no years left to wait.
There are no seasons left to wait.
There is one month.
On November 19, 2026, players on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S will finally be able to leave the trailers, leaks, screenshots and speculation behind and find out what Rockstar has actually spent all these years building.
And after everything that has happened on the road to Vice City, that may be the most significant GTA 6 milestone yet.
