Sony Interactive Entertainment detailed Ghost Recon Wildlands Last Rites on August 6, 2026 (UTC), describing the update as a major free addition that is out now on PS4 and PS5. The update adds a new linear story mission, new gameplay customization features, 4K and 60 FPS support on PS5 and PS5 Pro, and more content for returning players.
The PlayStation Blog story frames Last Rites as both a new mission and a broader refresh for Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands. Lead developers discussed the update’s story, the new antagonist La Llorona, and the way Ubisoft’s team looked back at how players used Wildlands after launch.
Ghost Recon Wildlands Last Rites adds a darker new story mission
Last Rites centers on a brand-new story-driven mission that players can jump into right away. The mission is set in a darker, more oppressive version of Bolivia, where the Ghosts enter a region controlled by Los Penitentes.
Los Penitentes are described as a new fanatical cult united by faith, sacrifice, and violent justice. Its members come from different walks of life, but the update presents the group as a force that turns the environment itself into a constant threat. The mission draws the Ghosts into a tense narrative built around betrayal and moral ambiguity.
The group is led by La Llorona, an enigmatic new foe. Ubisoft’s developers described the antagonist as dark and complex, shaped by betrayal from people she loved and trusted. La Llorona survived, but that survival came at a cost, leaving her caught between who she was and what she is becoming.
The developers’ description presents her vengeance as more than simple aggression. Her violence is framed as a way to reclaim control and make sense of pain after what she experienced. In the update’s story framing, she becomes a force of raw justice and destruction.
PS5 and PS5 Pro get 4K and 60 FPS support
For PlayStation players, one of the headline technical additions is support for 4K and 60 FPS on PS5 and PS5 Pro. The PlayStation Blog summary lists those upgrades alongside the new mission and customization additions as part of the free update.
The announcement specifically names PS4 and PS5 as the platforms for the update. It also describes Last Rites as a major free update, meaning returning Wildlands players on those PlayStation platforms can access the new content without a separate purchase for the update itself.
Customization expands with free unlocks and anniversary items
Last Rites also expands customization for Ghost characters and teammates. Ubisoft says many weapons and equipment items have been unlocked for free, including previously unreleased camos and challenge rewards that had not been obtainable.
The update also opens all Ghost War PvP classes for free through the in-game store, alongside many other items. For players who spent time adjusting loadouts, appearance, team presentation, or challenge layers in Wildlands, this is one of the update’s most direct quality-of-life additions.
Ubisoft is also adding new Character Smith items to celebrate Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon 25th Anniversary. Completing Last Rites unlocks a mysterious Operator Skin, tying at least one of the new cosmetic rewards directly to finishing the new mission.
The PlayStation Blog post gives a special thanks to Ubisoft Bordeaux for making the update possible.
Ubisoft says player freedom shaped the update
The PlayStation Blog feature connects Last Rites to the way Wildlands players approached the game after launch. One developer recalled being part of the Wildlands live team and said the team studied gameplay behaviors, player profiles, and playstyles across the community.
That work acted as what the developer called a “golden compass” for postlaunch support. The examples named include Ghost Mode and multiple Clancy-verse missions involving Splinter Cell or Rainbow Six Siege, content the post says remains available today.
A major point of focus was a group the team initially called “Sandbox Players.” At first, the developer said the team did not fully understand what those players were doing in Wildlands’ Bolivia. Through community interviews and data-informed playtests, the team came to see that these players were role-playing across a range of styles.
Some leaned into cooperative mil-sim play. Others added optional layers of difficulty or challenge simply for fun, sometimes taking hours to complete one mission perfectly. Ubisoft’s takeaway was that players were using the freedom and customization already present in Wildlands to create their own higher-intensity experiences.
That legacy is presented as a core reason for Last Rites. The developers point to the game’s customization and freedom of choice as major reasons players are still engaging with Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Wildlands, and say the new update follows up on that history.
PlayStation Plus members get extra items
PlayStation Plus members also get access to a brand-new exclusive Iconic Skin of La Llorona. The PlayStation Blog post also lists the P416 Micteca and 4-SHUR Blue Leader Sunglasses as items members can get.
The post describes the P416 Micteca as powerful and frames the sunglasses as a “presidential chic” addition. These bonuses sit alongside the broader free unlocks and customization additions available through the Last Rites update.
New players can access Wildlands through Ubisoft+ Classics
For players who do not already own the game, the PlayStation Blog post points to Ubisoft+ Classics as a way to play Ghost Recon Wildlands. Ubisoft+ Classics is available as a standalone subscription and is also included for PlayStation Plus Extra and PlayStation Plus Premium members.
That makes Last Rites relevant not only for returning Wildlands players, but also for newcomers who want to enter the game through the subscription options named in the announcement.
The update’s core pitch is straightforward: a free Wildlands refresh with a new story mission, a darker antagonist, expanded customization, free unlocks, and PS5-focused visual and performance support. For a game that Ubisoft says still draws engagement through freedom of choice, Last Rites is positioned as a direct continuation of that player-driven legacy.
