GTA 6 Gets Major New Details: Weight System, Muscle Growth, Character Switching and More Revealed

Rockstar Games has revealed a massive collection of new details about Grand Theft Auto VI, offering one of the clearest pictures yet of how the studio plans to combine the freedom and chaos traditionally associated with GTA with the deeper immersion and realism introduced in Red Dead Redemption 2.

The information comes from an exclusive new feature published by Dazed, which spoke directly with several senior Rockstar developers about GTA 6, Jason and Lucia, the world of Leonida and some of the gameplay systems players will experience when the game launches. The feature also includes a collection of new official GTA 6 imagery provided by Rockstar Games.

And some of the revelations confirm that GTA 6 will bring back ideas that longtime fans may remember from GTA: San Andreas, while dramatically expanding Rockstar’s approach to open-world immersion.

GTA 6 Will Combine GTA 5’s Freedom With Red Dead Redemption 2’s Immersion

One of the most important details concerns Rockstar’s overall philosophy for GTA 6.

According to Dazed, the game effectively sits somewhere between GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2. Players will still have access to the weapons, fast cars and freedom expected from Grand Theft Auto, but Leonida has been designed as a considerably more grounded and reactive world.

Actions that players could previously perform without attracting much attention may now generate believable responses.

One example provided by the report is simply walking down the street carrying a rifle. Rather than behaving as though nothing unusual is happening, the surrounding city and its inhabitants can react to what the player is doing.

The goal appears to be maintaining GTA’s freedom without making the player feel completely disconnected from the world around them.

Eating and Exercise Will Change Jason and Lucia’s Bodies

One of the biggest gameplay revelations is the return of dynamic body systems.

Food will affect Jason and Lucia’s weight, while exercising will visibly build and tone their muscles. It brings back a concept famously featured in GTA: San Andreas, where CJ’s physique changed according to the player’s lifestyle.

GTA 6 is apparently taking the concept even further.

Players who spend extended periods away from their beds, remain on the run from police or go through multi-day periods of partying will eventually see the effects reflected in the protagonists’ appearances.

In other words, Jason and Lucia’s physical appearance won’t necessarily remain static throughout the game.

Rockstar Reveals More About Jason and Lucia

The report also provides additional background information about GTA 6’s protagonists.

Jason Duval is described as an ex-military drug runner, while Lucia Caminos is described as a fighter who has recently been released from prison.

Their relationship will sit at the center of the story.

Rockstar Senior Vice President of Narrative Rupert Humphries describes GTA 6 as consciously built around a “Bonnie and Clyde-type narrative,” making Jason and Lucia’s romantic relationship substantially more important than romance has traditionally been in Grand Theft Auto.

Rockstar also suggests that player decisions could have repercussions involving the characters and their relationship that go deeper than traditional morality mechanics such as an honor system.

At the same time, Rockstar doesn’t want either protagonist to become an empty avatar.

The studio wants players to have enormous freedom to express themselves while preserving Jason and Lucia as established characters with personalities and stories of their own.

Players Can Control Jason and Lucia Together or Separately

Another major revelation concerns how the dual-protagonist system works.

Players will be able to spend time with Jason and Lucia together or separate them and explore independently.

Dazed provides a particularly interesting example of how seamlessly this could work.

While traveling toward a job, the player could drive down the highway as Jason before switching control to Lucia sitting in the passenger seat and using her in-game phone.

If the situation later turns into a police chase, the roles can change again, allowing one protagonist to drive while the other fires at pursuing enemies.

Most importantly, the example demonstrates that the relationship between the two characters isn’t limited to scripted cutscenes.

Jason and Lucia can apparently interact dynamically while traveling around the open world.

Social Media Is Confirmed for GTA 6

The smartphones seen throughout GTA 6’s promotional material will also play an important role.

Dazed explicitly confirms the existence of working social media feeds inside GTA 6.

That fits perfectly with what Rockstar has already shown in the game’s trailers, which frequently imitate viral videos, livestreams and social-media posts.

Considering GTA’s history of satirizing American culture, social media appears likely to become one of the major ways Rockstar portrays and parodies modern life in Leonida.

GTA 6 NPCs Are Designed to Feel More Believable

Rockstar is also placing enormous emphasis on the people inhabiting the world.

The variety visible across Vice City and Leonida is intentional. Rockstar wants GTA 6’s population to feel significantly more diverse and believable, rather than simply functioning as background characters.

The philosophy extends beyond NPC appearances.

Businesses, fashion labels, products, advertising campaigns and other fictional brands are being designed as pieces of an interconnected culture rather than isolated jokes.

Stu Petri, Rockstar’s vice president of 2D/UI design, told Dazed that the objective is to create a “vibrant, believable culture.”

That means clothing, hairstyles and other customization choices can become another way players express themselves through Jason and Lucia while still existing naturally within Leonida’s fictional culture.

GTA 6 Is Being Built as a Game Players Could Spend a Decade With

Perhaps the most revealing statement isn’t about an individual gameplay mechanic at all.

Rockstar understands that GTA 6 could potentially become a game people spend the next decade or more playing.

That’s especially significant considering what happened with GTA 5, which originally launched in 2013 and remained enormously successful for well over a decade.

Rob Nelson acknowledged the extraordinary pressure surrounding GTA 6 but explained that the pressure Rockstar puts on itself is potentially even greater than the expectations coming from outside the company.

With dynamic body changes, a more reactive population, working social media, deeper interactions between Jason and Lucia and a world intended to bridge the freedom of GTA 5 with the immersion of Red Dead Redemption 2, Rockstar is beginning to reveal just how ambitious its next open world really is.

And considerably more could be coming very soon.

Rockstar’s GTA 6 Extended Look is scheduled for August 27, potentially giving players their clearest official look yet at many of these systems in action.
