Rockstar Games deliberately moved away from the studio’s familiar narrated gameplay-trailer format when presenting Grand Theft Auto VI, according to comments attributed to Rockstar North co-studio head and head of development Rob Nelson during Kinda Funny Games’ extensive visit to the studio.
Kinda Funny’s Greg Miller and Andy Cortez were invited to Rockstar North in Edinburgh ahead of the release of GTA VI: An Extended Look, where they watched roughly two and a half hours of gameplay while Nelson discussed the game and answered questions.
According to the pair’s account of the conversation, Rockstar intentionally chose not to structure GTA 6’s latest presentation like the narrated gameplay showcases previously used for games such as Red Dead Redemption 2. Nelson reportedly indicated that this traditional approach had effectively already been explored before, while GTA 6 presents a much more complicated challenge because of the sheer amount of content Rockstar is trying to communicate.
The result was the 26-minute Extended Look released on August 27, which functioned more like an extended cinematic presentation of GTA 6’s world, characters and gameplay systems than a conventional feature-by-feature walkthrough.

Rockstar Wanted GTA 6’s Presentation to Feel Different
Rockstar has a long history of releasing heavily narrated gameplay videos ahead of its biggest launches. Red Dead Redemption 2, for example, received dedicated gameplay presentations explaining mechanics, activities and the game world directly to viewers.
That made GTA 6’s Extended Look particularly unusual.
Rather than having a narrator systematically introduce individual mechanics, Rockstar allowed the game itself to carry much of the presentation, moving between Jason and Lucia, robberies, driving, combat, exploration and everyday life across Leonida.
The footage was captured from the PlayStation 5 version of GTA 6, and Rockstar used the presentation to provide its most substantial official look at the game yet.
The different format was noticeable immediately, with other gaming outlets also observing that the video felt closer to an extended trailer than the guided, narrated gameplay breakdowns Rockstar had previously produced.
Rob Nelson Says GTA 6 Is Extremely Difficult to Showcase
The reasoning becomes clearer when looking at what Nelson has said elsewhere about the size and complexity of GTA 6.
In a recent Famitsu interview, Nelson explained that Rockstar simply cannot introduce every element of the game within a short presentation or through trailers alone.
That matches reports from Rockstar’s private preview sessions, where creators and journalists were shown considerably more gameplay than appeared in the public Extended Look.
Kinda Funny alone reportedly spent around two and a half hours watching Nelson demonstrate GTA 6, while other invited creators received similarly lengthy presentations.
Nelson has also described the project as so large that he is not certain anyone on Rockstar’s development team knows every part of the game.
Taken together, those comments help explain why Rockstar appears reluctant to reduce GTA 6 to a traditional list of mechanics narrated over short gameplay clips.

GTA 6’s Extended Look Only Showed Part of the Game
The Extended Look nevertheless revealed significantly more gameplay than Rockstar’s previous GTA 6 trailers.
The presentation offered extended glimpses of criminal activities, interactions between Jason and Lucia, police encounters, vehicles, interiors and the wider world of Leonida.
However, the private demonstrations given to journalists and creators revealed that considerably more systems exist beneath what Rockstar publicly showed.
Reports from the sessions have discussed expanded vehicle theft mechanics, more reactive NPC behavior, robberies, character relationships, player choices and a more systemic open world. Kinda Funny’s preview in particular came from a demonstration in which Nelson explored the game according to questions and requests from Miller and Cortez rather than simply following a completely fixed sequence.
That distinction is important. The Extended Look was not designed to explain every GTA 6 mechanic. Instead, it appears Rockstar wanted the presentation to communicate what living inside its version of Leonida will feel like.
Rockstar Still Has Plenty of GTA 6 to Reveal
Rockstar has therefore left itself substantial room for additional GTA 6 marketing before launch.
Nelson’s comments do not mean Rockstar will never release another gameplay-focused video, and the company has not publicly detailed exactly what its remaining marketing schedule will look like.
What is becoming increasingly clear, however, is that GTA 6 is being promoted differently from Rockstar’s previous major releases.
Even the Extended Look itself debuted through an unusual partnership with Netflix before becoming more widely available through Rockstar’s usual channels.
With GTA 6 currently scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, Rockstar still has more than two months to reveal additional details about the game.
For now, the studio’s decision to avoid a conventional narrated showcase appears intentional: GTA 6 has become difficult to summarize because Rockstar believes there is simply too much happening inside it to explain everything in a single trailer.
