Niu Lai Becomes an Unlikely Box-Office Hit in China

Niu Lai, also known as The Bull Comes, became an unexpected Chinese box-office success after attracting attention online. Its widely repeated $200 production-budget figure has not been independently verified.

The movie was created largely by director Xin Yumeng and his mother, Sun Lifang, who worked on the project for years without the resources normally associated with a theatrical animated production. Its extremely basic animation, unusual storytelling and homemade appearance initially attracted criticism rather than praise.

Niu Lai Went From Failure to Viral Sensation

The film’s theatrical run initially looked like a disaster. It reportedly earned only around $1,000 during its first week, but clips and screenshots soon began spreading across Chinese social media.

Instead of destroying the movie’s reputation, its unconventional animation became part of the appeal. Audiences began attending screenings out of curiosity, turning Niu Lai into an internet phenomenon and forcing theaters to add additional screenings.

A Yicai report published on August 18 put the film’s Chinese box-office gross at approximately $1.5 million. That dated figure is not a verified total for August 24.

Box-office gross is not profit. Without verified production and marketing costs, and the filmmakers’ share of ticket revenue, the film’s return on investment and any profitability record cannot be established.

The story itself follows a newborn calf through an unusual adventure centered around themes including growth, friendship, courage and survival.

What began as an obscure homemade animation has therefore become something much bigger: an example of how social media can transform a tiny independent production into a multimillion-dollar theatrical phenomenon almost overnight.
